Orh Bee Koh Moi/Black Glutinous Rice Dessert is sweet, creamy and flavorful. It's called Bubur Pulut Hitam in Malay and is a popular dessert in many Peranakan and Chinese families. This is an easy RECIPE for a delightful dessert that you can serve warm or cold.

Ingredients

  • 200 g (1 cup) black glutinous rice/black sticky rice, rinsed till water runs clear and soaked for 30 mins then drained

  • 1.2 liter (5 cups) water

  • 2 screwpine/pandan leaves, knotted

  • 50 g (1/4 cup) pitted Chinese red dates

  • 50 g (1/4 cup) dried longan

  • sugar or rock sugar to taste

  • 200 ml (1 cup) thick coconut milk, mix with 1/2 tsp salt

Method

01 Boil the water with the screwpine/pandan leaves in a large pot.

02 When water comes to a boil, add the black glutinous rice, red dates and dried longan.

Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 45 mins. Check on the water level every 15 mins, topping up if necessary.

03 Add sugar/rock sugar to taste.

Stir well and turn off heat.

04 Serve the dessert warm or chilled in small bowls.

Top with a spoonful or two of fresh coconut milk to enhance the flavor.


Notes

If using a pressure cooker, pressure cook for 15 mins. And if using a slow cooker, slow cook on high for 2 hours.

Unfinished portions can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before consuming.

If you want to serve chilled from the fridge, add ice cubes as it tends to thicken up when stored in the refrigerator.
